Skiing and Hockey...in CA?

I have been very busy the last week or so and obviously have upset the balance of life for those of you who faithfully look at my blog for your once a week outlook on life. I realize this has effected you greatly and I hope this post will restore your life to normal. We went up to Myron and Andreas two weeks ago and had a great time at Folsom lake and hanging out. We went to the Dordt hockey game in Oakland vs Wyoming on sat (the 16th) and had a great time there. Although Dordt is a small college we must have had about 25 fans there. This may not sound like much, but compared to the 3 fans of Wyoming, it was a large crowd. The poor turnout of Wyoming prompted me to yell more than normal and demean their team and their hockey skills most of the night. Dordt won and it was the best I have ever seen them play...

To the victor goes the spoils.

This weekend we organized a church ski trip up to Tahoe. It was a great time. We had about 15 people go and the conditions were epic for the mountains. There was fresh powder everywhere and the storm that moved in in the afternoon was very windy, but that created great drifts and sweet snowboarding. On Saturday night we got about 25 inches of fresh snow at the cabin and it was amazing. This is a lot of new, but is nothing compared to the 7ft or more of snow that was already on the ground. The driveway was like a canyon of snow and it is a good thing we stayed on the second and third floor of the house because you could not even see the first floor of the house. We arrived at home safe yesterday and had a great time.

Did anyone see the oscars yesterday?
If you answer yes to this please stop reading this blog...I cannot be associated with anyone who watches such crap.

Thanks for finally posting! I was thinking you got stuck in an avalanche on your ski trip! Those pictures are great! I can't believe all the snow you got while you were up there. I bet it was beautiful. I hope you got a video of Brenda skiing down the hill as requested. I would like to see you snowboard sometime as well. I bet you're a crazy man.

Nope, didn't see the Oscars...

I did not watch the oscars but one year I made the mistake of watching one of those night after shows that reviews all the dresses and jewels worn by the stars. I came to the conclusion that the money spent on clothing and jewels could put an end to world poverty and hunger forever--it gave me a sick feeling, so I don't do that any more---does anyone in Hollywood have any common sense?DebVE

Good question Deb. Good question. Well, we all know the most obvious answer is definitely "NO". Insert in any one of the thousands of scandals here and that should really end the argument. Forever.

Yeah, thanks for posting. My life is lame so I check your blog every day. I was getting depressed from just seeing that bullseye day after day. (Even though it was a great blog, don't get me wrong, and I laughed a lot the first time. There is only so many times you can read it)

The Dordt Blades in Oak-town? Now that's NEWS. What is even more surprising is that everyone got out alive! Hahaha jk...or am I? They should play Calvin sometime (and get thrashed) Oh wait, this is pretty much a pro-Dordt site huh? Calvin would win 4-2.

Anyone reading this blog needs to make plans to come out here and ski (or as I should say now that I have converted to snowboarding forever "ride") for spring break. It is truly an 'epic' time. I can attest because I was at Keystone this past weekend. If you are reading this and you secretly answered yes to the question about watching the Oscars then you need to get a life and find yourself outdoors, like... yesterday. Buy your ticket tonight actually.

Oh my gosh. That is a crazy amount of snow. Did the T-bird actually make it through this too?

Could you imagine having to shovel your drive way like that? That's crazy! And you guys know that I love snow...but that would be insane! That poor guy shovelling can barely through the snow over the side of the bank.

Who am I kidding!? I would love to have been there and would be grinning from ear to ear in all that powdery goodness!

There is a rumor going around that you harassed one of my students at the hockey game because he was wearing my old hockey jersey while working in the penatly box. Funny how after 7 years away from Dordt, that hockey jersey still finds a way to end up in the penatly box like it did when I used to wear it. Refs tend to overreact when you attack a guy with a skate and a beer bottle opener....

Skiing looked...epic. No other words needed.

Why do people watch the Oscars anyways? I truly pity the people who need to devote an hour (or how ever long the show is) to watch over paid and over dressed (thanks mom) people win some freakin' award in which they were overpaid to act in in the first place. Why laud and elevate somebody who would be nothing without me and you? Here me out: They only get paid the big bucks because our culture places such a huge emphasis on movies and entertainment. Without us going to movies, they would be bagging groceries at Hy-Vee. So in other words, I made them who they are and now they want a freakin' award for it?!? They are nothing without (the collective) me! I say we boycott movies and other pointless forms of entertainment (sports is exempt...I know, hypocritical) and we should hold an award ceremony for teachers, nurses, farmers, tax consultants, pastors, and employees of BevMo. They make the world go 'round; not somebody who needs 25 million to show their face for 120 minutes on a screen. But people, we made these monsters. The Oscars are simply a result of our entertainment fix gone out of control. They now control us. Just do a quick Internet search to find all the commentaries on the Oscars. You'll see.

Laura, you will find no footage of me tearing up the hills like your mother-in-law. That was so cute! No, we did not take the T-bird, although I am sure it could have handled the two feet of snow like the beast that it is.
Joel, FYI, Dordt might match up with Calvin in the championship game at Nationals in March. That is if Calvin can win 3 games to even make it to the finals. This is the only sport that the two colleges could ever match up and thankfully it is the one sport that Dordt might have the upper hand. I hope it happens, it would be as monumental as Hoosiers.
If I was ever forced to go to the Oscars (to waste 4 hours of my life) I would wear a old bridesmaid dress that my mom made. So when the entertainment commentators would ask me if it was Versage or Gucci that I was wearing I would respond, " No, it is actually a store you may have heard of, Wal-Mart, that is wear I got my material and pattern which my mom whipped together." I would like to see their reaction to that, I am sure I would get best dressed in a heartbeat.

Nice new look, here, John! Did you take that picture at the top? It's amazing. Award winning, I'd say.

I cant believe all that snow! I'm sure it made for some sweet skiing! The hockey game sounded fun, would have been great to join you guys! I like the new look of your blog. Is it just one of the templates or a special layout?

I did not take the picture, but thought it was cool anyway. I make an effort to only past authentic picture on the blog and not any of the cut and past you may see other places. This picture was an excaption. Enjoy the picture while you can, because it will change this week.
